Modern Gentlemen’s Wardrobe Essentials

Today, in our world of sweatpants, hoodies and basketball shorts (even in the winter,  ugh) dressing well is not a focus on the minds of the typical modern man. For those who are beginning to understand the importance ofr style, the idea of dressing well 24/7 is one that met with  . Style is an art form and like all other forms of art it begins with a small framework from which to continuously build into something greater. The key to becoming a man with a great sense of style is to understand and utilize the foundations of men’s fashion on which to build a stylish and versatile wardrobe.

These are articles of clothes that are timeless classics that can be interwoven into any trends and personal taste. So without further adieu, I am going to present two categories of the must have pieces that will help you to start dressing like a man who is going places and if you take my advice, you will look like the accomplished man of distinction that we are all capable of being.

Formal Wear

By formal wear I’m not talking black tie, I’m referring to any event where you need to don a tie such as work (non-business casual), an interview or a wedding and the items are as follows:

Black or Grey Suit

Yes, we all know that every man should own at least one suit, but the specs of that lone suit is very important to keep in mind. This suit will be the backbone of your wardrobe that can be incorporated into other looks so we want to go for a neutral color like black or grey. These colors are conservative and versatile enough to work in any occasion that requires a suit.

If you are going with black, try to find the darkest hue as some of the lighter tones can look a bit dusty and therefore lower in quality. If you’re starting off with grey, always go for a darker tone such as charcoal which can be worn on an interview or for a special night out with that special someone.

Detail is everything so you will want to make sure that the suit fits properly as this is can make or break how sharp you look. My advice is to buy a suit off the rack that fits you well and simply take it to a tailor to get detailed adjustment that will make the suit look as if it was tailor made to your measurements.

 White and Blue Shirt

A classic white shirt is a timeless style staple as it can be worn in so many different ways. A crisp white shirt can make any look more appealing and can be dressed up or down. The same goes for a blue shirt and by blue, I mean a light colored solid or pinstriped blue that can be worn on and off the clock.

The Tie

A tie is usually the first thing we notice in an ensemble so this is where you will want to add a bit of color and visual interest to your look. First off, size matters (pun intended) so you will want the tip of your tie to fall just below the top line of your belt. Also, you will want to buy a narrow tie at about two and a quarter to two and three-quarter inches at the widest point as this will look dapper on any body type.

Super skinny may look like a tape measure while extra wide will make you look like a 1980’s stock broker. Of course, you’re free here to play with color and pattern as long as coordinates well with the suit and shirt combo. A charcoal suit and white shirt would look great with a deep purple tie in any pattern for instance but if you’re ever in doubt, just ask a cute sales girl for help and if she’s single, ask her out for coffee as well.

Black and Brown shoe / Belt Combo

I CRINGE every time a see a guy in his twenties sporting a brown belt with black shoes or vice versa. Black on black is easy to pair but keep in mind that your browns do not have to be the exact same but in a professional setting, try not to have too much of a contrast between the two colors of brown. A simple lace up shoe or a classic wingtip will do but be sure to avoid the square toed shoes as these look dated and clunky. My favorites are the shoes with a narrow shape and rounded at the toes.

Navy Blue Blazer

A navy blue blazer gives you a ton of options since this can also be dressed up or down as pictured in the examples above. My favorite is the kind that feature gold buttons which adds a bit of elegance and dignity to your look. As with the suit, the fit make all the difference, so be sure to get this tailored and you will see just how amazing this one piece combines with many of the items I will introduce.

Watches

A simple black and a brown leather wristwatch can be worn at any occasion and can be purchased for a reasonable price on any online retailer or store that offers reasonable prices. Just as I said with the brown belt and shoe combo, the watch does not have to be an exact match but if your shoes and belt are black, be sure that your watch trap is as well. This will add consistency in your outfit that people will notice and appreciate.

Casual Wear

Here, I’ll guide you through your everyday look from grocery shopping to hanging out with friends and everything in between. These pieces can be intertwined with some of the formal wear pieces to create stylish and effortless looks that will resemble the pages of the best menswear magazines.

White Tee Shirt

A crisp white tee is a perfect wardrobe staple because of its versatility.  It’s simple, affordable and easy to mix and match with other pieces to create a cool and casual look. Crew necks will do, but my favorites are the V-necks. They improve everyone’s physique and if you have a few extra pounds, they will act as a slimming agent by visually making your shoulders appear wider and giving you that uber masculine V-shape that’s most desirable.

Jeans

Jeans are a timeless staple that can be worn with many of the pieces previously mentioned. You can wear these with your white or blue button up shirts or for a dressy casual look, wear jeans with your white V-neck and the navy blue blazer. There are a ton of different brands but my personal favorite is Levi’s Jeans which gives you high quality without the high price. In regard to color, if I had to pick only one pair, I would go for a deeper hue such as dark indigo. This color will compliment any others worn in a single look and tend to look more luxurious than the lighter tones because of its richness. To keep it classic, these jeans should be free of any writing, rips or acid wash, just a solid dark blue.

Chinos

A lot of people are unfamiliar with this term as these are so often just referred to as khaki’s. Khaki is actually a color while Chinos are the type of pants that usually hold this color and are made of chino cloth. Chinos come is a large range of colors but for our purpose, I would go with a well fitted khaki colored pair in either a straight or slim fit.

Jumper and Cardigan

A jumper or pullover sweater is a casual piece that can be layered with any of the items previously mentioned. You can wear it with your suit for a dressed down yet refined look or wear it alone with a pair of jeans to run errands. Just as with the white tees, the V-neck pullovers are more flattering in creating a V shape in your torso.  Get the one pictured above here.

Cardigans are what I am known for and you will rarely catch me without one in the cooler seasons. Cardigans are great because you can layer them with so many different pieces and give you outfits a more tailored look with the comfort of wearing a sweater. This is the area where I urge you to add some fun colors to the mix that will add a pop to all of the neutrals previously discussed. If you’re feeling confident enough, try a bold pattern like extra wide strips to add some visual awesomeness to your closet.

White Sneakers

I’m not talking running shoes here guys! High fashion sneakers have been all the rage for the past few years but all you need is a simple white sneaker like Chuck Taylor’s. These low key kicks are understated and just plain cool to pair with a myriad of looks. Go with a low top and pair them with your khakis or jeans and if you want to add a cool edge, roll the legs of your pants up in two small folds and rock a pair of no show sock for a resort look in the warmer months.

So there you have it! Add these items into your wardrobe and it will add an air of class to your style and thankfully, these classic pieces will never go out of style. I can assure you that unlike that those cut up jeans and Ed Hardy tees you loved so much in high school (or dare I say after) you will be wearing these pieces for years to come and turn heads in every setting with a silent charm that will add to your sex appeal and your confidence. Have fun in your new role as a sex symbol!
